Girls Youth & Middle School Lacrosse FAQs
Who is this league for?
We are looking for Youth (5th and 6th grade) and Middle School (7th and 8th grade) girls that have an interest in playing lacrosse for the Wayzata Lacrosse Association.
What does the fee cover?
The fee covers indoor gym & dome time, use of a uniform, game referees, goalie equipment, field rental, league fees and play day costs. We are a start up association and each level is self-funded.
What equipment do I need?
Equipment for girl′s lacrosse is fairly minimal. You will need a stick, goggles, cleats (soccer cleats work best) and a colored mouth guard. For those interesting in playing the goalie position, the association provides the equipment.
Can I play other sports?
Absolutely! We hope to roster 25 players for each team and need 18-20 for a full game. We know that many of our players will have conflicts with soccer, hockey, basketball, dance and softball. All we ask is that you make as many games and practices as possible and let us know when you cannot make it.
Is Lacrosse a contact sport?
There is a significant misconception out there that girl′s lacrosse is a "rough" sport. Girl′s lacrosse differs from boys in that you are not allowed to contact another player with your stick. Stick to stick contact is allowed at the Middle School level but not at the Youth level. I′d describe the contact as much like basketball. There is some bumping but that is about all. It is a game of skill, speed and teamwork.
When do we practice/play games?
The season will run from mid-March through May. We will practice indoors during March. Following Spring Break we′ll move outside with most of our practices at local parks within the district. Those practices will vary but plan on 3 practices/games per week. Occasionally, they will be on the weekend day. Practices will generally last 1-1/4 hours. Games are 1 hour.
There will likely also be one or two "play days" where we play 2 or 3 30 minute games against a couple different teams. It will be held at one location, generally on a Saturday. Last year the play day was at The Blake School.
Is this considered a travel sport?
While we will play teams from other cities I would not consider this a "travel" sport. Our goal is to expose girls to this game and let them learn how much fun it can be. That said, I would consider this a competitive sport rather than recreational.
How do I sign up?
You can visit the Wayzata Lacrosse website (www.wayzatalax.com) and select "register online" on the left side. Be sure to have your credit card handy. Your registration fee includes membership in US Lacrosse, which provides insurance to the participants. This is required by the league. You will be sent your membership card in the mail in 4-6 weeks. Be sure to pick the appropriate level for your daughter′s grade.
