**REMINDER** - **UPDATE** - U13 Tryout Schedule
by posted 05/08/2013

REMINDER***

Due to the multiple rescheduled games and the start of the box lacrosse tournament, Sunday's final scrimmage is postponed until it can be rescheduled.  There is also a possibility that the determination may be made that the scrimmage may not be needed.  We will send an announcement out shortly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a reminder for tonight's scrimmages for the U13 Tryouts/Evaluations.  The scrimmages will going on as planned unless the City of Plymouth cancels field use due to inclement weather.  All players will need to show up 30 minutes early to be checked in and to receive their jersey color for the scrimmage.

Due to the multiple rescheduled games and the start of the box lacrosse tournament, Sunday's final scrimmage is postponed until it can be rescheduled.  There is also a possibility that the determination may be made that the scrimmage may not be needed.  This means it is extremely important that all of the players make tonight's scrimmages.

We are asking that all goalies stay for the full two hours so they can be evaluated against all players.

Thanks!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
U13 Parents and Players,

Please mark the following dates on your calendars for the U13 team tryouts and evaluations.  We will have four teams at this level - one A team and three B teams.  The A team tryouts and B team evaluations will take place at Elm Creek Fields on:

May 13th – Group 1 Skills Evaluation– 6:00pm-8:00pm (Field C)
May 15th – Group 2 Skills Evaluation– 6:00pm-8:00pm (Field D)
May 17th – Group 1 Scrimmage Evaluation– 6:00pm-7:00pm (Field D)
May 17th – Group 2 Scrimmage Evaluation– 7:00pm-8:00pm (Field D)
May 19th – Final Scrimmage Evaluation– 6:30pm-8:00pm (Plymouth Creek Center Turf)

Players will be scheduled into 2 groups, labeled Group 1 and Group 2.  A group listing will be sent out shortly.

Tryout/evaluation registration will begin at 5:30.  Players will need to be dressed and ready to take the field at 5:55pm.  Players will be required to make all of their group sessions in order to be considered for the A team.

PLEASE NOTE:  SPRING TEAM PLAYERS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO WEAR ANY PORTION OF THEIR SPRING JERSEY FOR THESE TRYOUTS.  PLAYERS WILL BE ASKED TO CHANGE IMMEDIATELY OR WILL NEED TO RETURN HOME TO CHANGE.

Parents please forward the following information to the President of WLA ( ) for your player before May 12th:

Player Name
Evaluation position 1 (This is their primary position for the tryout/evaluation)
Evaluation position 2 (This is the secondary postions for the tryout/evaluation)
A team candidate (Is your player trying out for the A team?)
Years played

And finally, I have a list of expectations of the players and parents when considering the A team:

  • Please understand that this is the highest level of play and will require a high level commitment and attendance from not only the players but from you, the parent, also.
  • Athletic Gold helmets with white visor and chin strap protector will be required at this level for the 2013 season.
  • We are finalizing plans on one local tournament and one out of town tournament in Sun Prairie, WI.  The A team players will be assessed for this tournament and for any tournament above the one local tournament that is included in your registration fee.  The goal is to get as much exposure for the players to other associations both local and out of state.
  • Coaches will address individual team expectations at a future team/parent meeting.

Regards,

Summer Schedule and Tryouts
by posted 04/30/2013

Parents and Players,

Mother Nature has really messed with everyone's schedule this spring, including the WLA Summer Program.  Current Spring Outdoor and Box Lacrosse teams are facing the possibility of extending their season because of the unusual weather we have had this spring.  Who would have thought that the Plymouth Creek Center Fieldhouse would still have the dome up as of May 1st?

I have put together a tentative schedule of upcoming summer events so all summer participants can have an idea of what to expect over the next few weeks.

Boys Program
U15 tryouts and evaluations start the week of May 6th - weather/field conditions permitting
U13 tryouts and evaluations start the week of May 13th - weather/field conditions permitting
U11 teams will be formed around May 20th
U9 teams will be formed around May 20th

Spring teams will see their seasons extended, quite possibly, until June 1st.  We are working very diligently to get all games rescheduled early enough to prevent the spring season extension to go that long.

Girls Program
7/8 team will be formed around May 20th
5/6 team will be formed around May 20th
3/4 team will be formed around May 20th

Spring teams will see their seasons extended, quite possibly, until June 1st.  We are working very diligently to get all games rescheduled early enough to prevent the spring season extension to go that long.

We will update current and new schedules as quickly as we can.  We are at the liberty of mother nature at the moment.  Thank you in advance for your understanding and patience while the WLA gets the summer program started.  Please check the home page frequently for updates as we will be posting everything there.

Regards.

SUMMER LACROSSE CAMP 2013

Camp Philosophy:  The Lacrosse Summer Clinics are designed to welcome new players, improve current player’s skills, and challenge skilled players. The clinics will provide a complete training program beginning with basic skills, individual techniques and position specific instruction.  The Training program is designed to use the off-season as a time to develop skills and ensure that each athlete leaves with a better sense of the game ! The players will be taught to incorporate these skills into game situations on both offense and defense.

First and foremost, the coaching staff believes that lacrosse should be fun!  We focus on skills and fundamentals through a variety of activities so that the players can have a positive lacrosse experience.  We pride ourselves in building young men of character, teaching players to succeed in a team environment, and instilling players with an even deeper passion for the game of lacrosse.

Camp Information: The camp will emphasize individual instruction in all phases of the game of lacrosse.  Special emphasis will be given to the development of shooting, stick skills, and the continued improvement of overall lacrosse IQ. Defensive and offensive strategy will also be emphasized.  All instruction will be geared toward each player’s ability. This camp is for all levels including the top varsity players to the beginning 2nd grader.

NEW BOYS AGE LEVELS ADOPTED FOR 2013 SEASONS
by posted 11/19/2012

UPDATE....12/3/12

The Youth Box League (YBL-MN Swarm) has decide to run their league to be in sync with the age levels that US Lacrosse has set below for their 2013 season.  All leagues will be consistent with the new age levels, which should make registrations easier for everyone.

U9

  • Proposed game nights are Friday night or Sunday night during the season
  • 2 pass rule in effect at this level
  • This is a developmental level meaning more practices and less games.  The spring league and summer league are both looking at 5 game seasons.

U11

  • The short defensive stick rule will be in effect at this level

U13
U15

  • Any 9th grader who is age-eligible (born on or after September 1, 1997) can only play U15 with a waiver from the MBSLA board.

Stay tuned for more details as they come in about all leagues...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Parents and Players,

The MBSLA and YLM Leagues both passed resolutions to adopt the published age levels for US Lacrosse beginning with the 2013 playing seasons.  Instead of a grade based system, the system now turns to the current age of the player.

The following age groupings are determined as of the August 31st preceding competition:

NOTE: Age group references used in this section are in common usage but should not be understood literally. The U15 (read: "Under 15") grouping means that, if a player is 14 years old on the cutoff date, he may participate in U15 competition as a 15- year old.

U15:

All players must be 14 years old or younger on the August 31st preceding competition (8/31/12).

U13:

All players must be 12 years old or younger on the August 31st preceding competition (8/31/12).

U11:

All players must be 10 years old or younger on the August 31st preceding competition (8/31/12).

U9:

All players must be 8 years old or younger on the August 31st preceding competition (8/31/12).

Fall 2012 - 2013 Age Grouping Quick Reference Table Birth date

Age Bracket

Born on or after 9/1/1997

Born on or after 9/1/1999

U13

There will be many questions as we transition to these new age levels for the 2013 seasons.  Our goal is to have everything spelled out as clearly as possible for you in future communications.  If you do have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask any of the WLA Board members.

Respectfully Submitted,

Concussion Awareness
by posted 11/09/2012

Minnesota Concussion Law

It's now law in Minnesota that if young athletes show signs of a concussion, coaches must sideline them until they can get a medical all-clear.

A concussion is a brain injury caused by a bump or blow to the head that can change the way your brain normally works. Even what seems to be a mild bump or blow to the head can be serious.

To help ensure the health and safety of our young athletes, the Centers for Disease Control developed the Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports initiative to offer information about concussions to coaches, parents, and athletes involved in youth sports.

The Heads Up initiative provides important information on preventing, recognizing, and responding to a concussion.

A must-see primer for kids and parents

Return-To-Play Policy

If an athlete is removed from play because they are showing signs or symptoms of a concussion, Minnesota's Concussion Law requires they receive written authorization from a medical professional to return to play. Please provide a doctor's note to your head coach, once your athlete has been cleared.

For Coaches

All concussions are serious. To help recognize a concussion, you should watch for the following two things among your athletes:

1. A forceful blow to the head or body that results in rapid movement of the head.
AND
2. Any change in the athlete's behavior, thinking, or physical functioning.

For Parents

What should you do if you think your child has a concussion?

• Seek medical attention.
• Keep your child out of play. A child may NOT return to play until a medical professional says it's OK. Children who return to play too soon risk a greater chance of having a second concussion.
• Tell your child's coach about any recent concussion.

For Athletes

What should I do if I think I have a concussion?

• Tell your coaches and your parents. Never ignore a blow to the head, even if you feel fine.
• Get a medical check up. A doctor can tell you if you have a concussion and when it is safe for you to return to play.
• Give yourself time to get better. Your brain needs time to heal.
